Ultrasound therapy is a treatment used by many healthcare providers to relieve pain and to promote soft tissue healing. While ultrasound therapy is not effective for all chronic pain conditions, it may help reduce your pain if you have any of the following:
- Myofascial pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Pain caused by scar tissue
- Phantom limb pain
- Sprains and strains
Hill Labs HF-54 Ultrasound
The HF54 PLUS eliminates the two most common application errors associated with a traditional manual ultrasound treatment that have been shown to reduce the therapeutic effectiveness of ultrasound.
These errors are:
Treating for less than 10 minutes.
It is difficult for providers to properly administer manual ultrasound for 10 minutes or more. However, studies show that treatments over 10 minutes are much more effective. With the HF54 PLUS Ultrasound, providers can now administer a safe, low intensity pulsed ultrasound over a larger surface area for a longer amount of time.
Treating too large of a surface area.
Moving a traditional ultrasound over a large area reduces the ultrasound dosage to the targeted injury, which therefore reduces the effectiveness of an ultrasound treatment. At 65cm2, the HF54 PLUS soundhead is over 6x times the size of a convention transducer! With no need to move the soundhead, the HF54 PLUS delivers consistant ultrasound to a larger area.
Our Unique Soundhead
The HF54 PLUS produces an even distribution of sound waves throughout its large (3 5/8″) soundhead of 3 uniform and harmonized crystals. Two channels of interferential and premod current for muscle stim are included with the unit. Premod can be used in combination with ultrasound directly through 1 or 2 soundheads.
How Is Ultrasound Therapy Performed?
Your therapist will select a small surface area to work on for anywhere from five to 10 minutes. A gel is applied either to the transducer head or to your skin, which helps the sound waves evenly penetrate the skin. During your ultrasound therapy treatment, your therapist will continually move the transducer head over and around the selected area.
Will I Feel Anything During Ultrasound Therapy?
Other than the coolness of the gel pad and sound head, you should not feel anything during an ultrasound treatment with the HF-54.
Is Ultrasound Therapy Safe?
Ultrasound therapy is deemed safe by the FDA provided the individual performing the treatment is properly trained & qualified to do so.
Ultrasound therapy should not be used on these body parts:
- Over the abdomen, pelvic regions or lower back in women who are menstruating or pregnant
- Over lesions, broken skin or healing fractures
- Around the eyes, breasts or sexual organs
- Over any areas with plastic implants
- Over or near areas with malignant tumors
- Over areas with impaired sensations or blood flow
Does Ultrasound Therapy Really Work?
The literature is mixed on the benefits of ultrasound therapy. Some studies show that it can effectively control certain types of chronic pain, while others say there is little difference between ultrasound therapy and other traditional therapy treatments (such as heat, stretching and electrical stimulation) for pain control. A 2017 study showed that while patients receiving ultrasound therapy showed some improvement, a platelet-rich plasma injection was more effective than both ultrasound therapy and steroid injections for shoulder periarthritis.
Much like pain medication, finding the treatment modality that decreases your pain is often a trial and error process. If you have not had any improvement in your pain after several ultrasound treatments, ask your therapist or doctor about trying something else.
More Than Ultrasound!
The Hill Labs HF-54 device is also capable of performing Electrical Muscle Stimulation aka E-Stim or Muscle Stim. Electrical stimulation is a great way to address chronic pain as well as more recent injuries to the musculoskeletal system.
E-Stim is different from TENS (transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation). TENS focuses on surface-level tissues and nerves, while EMS goes deep in the muscles and is used to relax the muscles when they suffer from lowered mobility, flexibility, and strength.
EMS can be considered the long-term approach to muscular health and wellness while TENS is short-term and typically used for pain management.
The Benefits of Electrical Stimulation
There are numerous benefits to receiving regular stimulation at your local chiropractor. Our specialists at Premier Chiropractic & Wellness remain up to date on research in the field and have outlined numerous ways in which it can improve your current health and flexibility. These include:
- Stimulating muscular blood flow
- Increasing strength
- Reducing muscle pain
- Improving psychological recovery
These benefits are accomplished through the natural action of electrical stimulation. The process increases blood flow in the region, causes muscle contractions which improve strength, and eliminate pain through warmth and the blood flow.
Psychologically, researchers discovered undergoing treatments like electrical stimulation improves a patient’s thoughts about their treatment and its eventual outcome. If you are struggling with an injury and are looking for a way to achieve multiple benefits at once, we highly recommend you considering E-Stim.
